Southern Gothic Sculpture & Ceramics
About the Artist
James’ personal iconography is rich with references to the cultural, social, political, and religious experiences of growing up in Mississippi.
His outlook can be humorous, poignant, and at times confrontational.
While James is influenced by all that he hears and sees, his historical art influences range widely from the folk art of the South to the artworks of the Renaissance.
His work is constructed using the methods of coiling, pinching, and carving. All pieces are constructed hollow and with armatures.
Once fired to cone 1, the surfaces are applied with numerous layers of underglazes, glazes, and paints.
James’ work carries the weight of what he finds difficult to put into words.
