About the Artist

James’s personal iconography is rich with references to the cultural, social, political, and religious experiences of growing up in Mississippi. His outlook can be humorous, poignant, and at times confrontational.

While James is influenced by all that he sees and hears, his historical artistic influences range widely, from the folk art of the American South to the art of the Renaissance.

His work is constructed using the methods of coiling, pinching, and carving. Each piece is built hollow and without the use of armatures.

After being fired to cone 1, the surfaces are finished with numerous layers of underglazes, glazes, and paint.

James’s work carries the weight of what he finds difficult to put into words.
